THE DELIVERER
Narrator: Generations have passed. The Israelites that have settled in
Egypt in the time of Joseph have grown in number. This concerned
the new Pharoah, who no longer remembered the good that Joseph
had done for a Pharoah and Egypt long ago.
Pharoah: These Israelites are so numerous and strong.
They are a threat to our security.
Advisor: I agree great one, there are places where
they outnumber us.
Pharoah: We have many enemies and they could use
this against us.
Advisor: Yes, they could work to turn these Israelites
against us, and we could have whole provinces
in rebellion.
Pharoah: In the event of an attack they may join with
our enemies.
Advisor: We must control them somehow.
Pharoah: Yes, we must get a handle on them, before
the problem is out of our grasp.
Advisor: One way is to tighten our grip.
Pharoah: What are you suggesting?
Advisor: We’ll make them our slaves. Then we will have
total control.
Pharoah: Then let it be done!
Narrator: So the Egyptians put slave drivers over the
Israelites to crush their spirits with hard labor.
They built cities for the Pharoah. But the more
the Israelites were oppressed the more their
numbers increased and the farther they spread
in the land.
Pharoah: Our plan is no working. There are more Israelites
than ever before.
Advisors: They would certainly join with our enemies now
to free themselves.
Pharoah: We must make sure that no new males are born
to rise up against us in years to come.
Advisor: This surely would be a blow to their morale as
well. This may work.
Pharoah: This is my decree: Take every newborn Hebrew
boy and throw him into the Nile, but let the
girls live. So I have spoken, so let it be done.
Narrator: During this time a man from the tribe of Levi
married a woman of his own tribe and she bore
him a son.
Mother: Oh, my son, I love you so. I cannot let you go.
Miriam: What will we do, mother. The Pharoah has
ordered us to throw him in the Nile.
Mother: I just can’t. We will hide him.
Miriam: I will help.
Mother: We must make sure nobody finds out. One of
us must be with him at all times.
Miriam: If anyone hears him it will be over, they will
surely take him away.
Narrator: For three months they hid the child successfully.
But it was getting harder and harder to keep
the secret from others.
Miriam: What are you doing, Mother?
Mother: I am making a basket and covering it with tar
so it will float. Its done. Let’s go down to the
river. We must make sure nobody sees us.
Miriam: Will he be OK?
Mother: I am sure God will look out for him. Goodbye,
my son. May God and the river carry you to
a safe place. Miriam, stay and watch as long
as you can.
Miriam: Yes, I will.
Princess: What is this?
Servant: A basket.
Princess: What’s in it?
Servant: There’s crying.
Princess: It’s a baby. O such a sweet thing. He’s
precious. This is one of the Hebrew babies.
Servant: What shall we do with him?
Miriam: Can I help? Shall I go and call a Hebrew
woman to nurse the baby for you?
Princess: Yes, that is a good idea. Please do.
Miriam: Mother, Mother. He is safe. The Pharoah’s
daughter found him.
Mother: Oh, no.
Miriam: Don’t worry. She does not wish to harm him.
She has sent me to get someone to nurse him.
Mother: God is good.
Narrator: So the baby and mother are reunited and she
cared for her son who was now protected by
the Pharoah’s own daughter.
Princess: I thank you, for helping with this child.
Mother: It was my joy to take care of him.
Princess: I have grown very fond of him. I will take
him as my own. He will be my son.
Mother: It will be hard to let him go.
Princess: I know. But he is in good hands. He will have
a staff of servants to care for him.
Mother: Goodbye, son. I love you.
Princess: I will name him, Moses, because I pulled him
out of the water.
Narrator: The boy Moses grew up with all the
advantages of Pharoah’s household, but
he became aware of the heavy burden
laid upon his people the Hebrews. On one
occasion he became enraged at an evil Egyptian
taskmaster abusing some Hebrews and
lashed out at him, killing him. This brought
down on Moses the wrath of the Pharoah and
Moses fled the land. He settled in the land
of Midian and became a shepherd near the
mountain of God.
Moses: What is this strange thing? The bush is
is on fire but not burning up! How can this
be?
God: Moses, Moses!
Moses: Yes, here I am.
God: Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals,
because you are standing on holy ground. I am
the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob.
Moses: I cannot look. This is too much for me.
God: I have seen how cruelly my people are being
treated in Egypt. I have heard their cries.
I have come down to rescue them and bring
them into a new and fertile land. I am sending
you so that you may lead my people out of Egypt.
Moses: I am nobody. How can I go to the king and
bring the Israelites out of Egypt?
God: I will be with you, and when you bring the people
out of Egypt, you will worship me on this mountain.
That will be proof that I sent you.
Moses: When I go to the Israelites and say to them,
the god of my ancestors sent me to you,
they will ask me, What is His Name? What
will I tell them?
God: I am who I am. The One Who is I Am has
sent you.
Narrator: So Moses and his family, along with his brother
Aaron whom God had sent with Moses to help
Him speak to Pharoah go to Egypt. They bring
the message of Lord God to Pharoah.
Moses: The Lord, the God of Israel says, Let My
people go.
Pharoah: Why should I listen to Him and let Israel go.
I do not know the Lord, and I will not let
Israel go.
Aaron: The God of the Hebrews has revealed Himself
to us. Allow us to travel three days into the
desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.
Pharoah: What do you mean by making the people neglect
their work? Get those slaves back to work. You
people have become more numerous than the
Egyptians. And now you want to stop working…
Make them work harder and keep them busy, so
they won’t have time to listen to a pack of lies.
Don’t give them anymore straw for brick making,
make them find it themselves, but I want the
same amount of bricks made as before.
Egyptian Slavedriver: Why aren’t you making the same number
of bricks as before.
Israelite foreman 1: We are given no straw, but still you want
bricks. We can’t find enough straw ourselves
to keep up.
Israelite foreman 2: Now we are beaten for not making enough
bricks.
Pharoah: What do you want?
Israelite foreman 1: We need straw your majesty.
Israelite foreman 2: We cannot keep up with the amount of
bricks we are asked to make.
Pharoah: You are just lazy, and don’t want to work.
Get back to work. You will not get any
straw. Make bricks. Go do it.
Israelite foreman 1: What have you done to us?
Israelite foreman 2: The Pharoah and his officers hate us.
Israelite foreman 1: You have given them an excuse to kill us.
Moses: Ever since I went to the Pharoah to speak
for You, he has treated them cruelly. And
You have done nothing to help.
God: Now You will see what I will do. I will
force him to let my people go. Tell the
Israelites and Pharoah that I have ordered
You to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.
Narrator: Moses and Aaron went back to speak to
Pharoah on several occasion but he would not
give way to the Lord’s demands. He became
evenmore resolved not to let them go. Despite
miracles he was shown and plagues afflicting
his land and people he would not bend his will
to the Lord’s. But then it happened…
Pharoah: My son is dead! I cannot fight this God of
Moses. Summon them at once!
Advisor: Yes, great one, we will get him.
Pharoah: Get out, you and your Israelites. Take your
sheep, goats and cattle and leave. Also pray
for a blessing on me.
Moses: Remember this day – the day which you left
Egypt, the place where you were slaves. This
is the day the Lord brought you out by His
great power.
Narrator: When the Pharoah let the people go, God
led them through the desert toward the
Red Sea. During the day He went in front
of them in a pillar of cloud to show them
the way, and at night in a pillar of fire to
give them light. He was always in front of
them.
Pharoah: What have we done?
Advisor: We have let the Israelites escape, and we have
lost them as our slaves!
Pharoah: We must get them back. Summon the army!
Advisor: Call out the army! Now! We have no time to lose!
Pharoah: We will pursue them and bring them back!
Narrator: When the Israelites saw the Pharoah and his
army coming after them they were terrified!
Israelite 1: Weren’t there any graves in Egypt?
Israelite 2: Look what you have done by bringing us out of
Egypt!
Israelite 3: Didn’t we tell you before we left that this would
happen?
Israelite 1: We told you to leave us alone.
Israelite 2: We told you to let us go on being slaves of the
Egyptians.
Israelite 3: It would be better to be slaves than to die here
in the desert.
Moses: Do not be afraid!
Aaron: Stand your ground!
Moses: You will see what the Lord will do to save you
today.
Aaron: You will never see these Egyptians again.
Moses: The Lord will fight for you.
Aaron: And all you have to do is keep still.
God: Why are you crying out for help? Tell the people
to move forward. Lift up your walking stick and
hold it over the sea. The water will divide and the
Israelites will be able to walk through the sea on
dry land.
Israelite 1: Look pillar is moving.
Israelite 2: It is blocking the army.
Israelite 3: They can’t get to us.
Israelite 1: What is Moses doing?
Israelite 2: He is raising his hands toward the sea.
Israelite 3: The wind.
Israelite 1: The waters are splitting.
Israelite 2: Look there’s a road right through the sea.
Israelite 3: What’s Moses doing?
Israelite 1: He’s motioning for us to move forward.
Israelite 2: Through the sea. I’m scared.
Israelite 3: Surely, the Lord is with us.
Israelite 1: Yes, the Lord is with us as Moses said.
Israelite 2: Alright, here we go.
Israelite 3: We are finally through. That was something.
Israelite 1: Look, the Egyptians are coming.
Israelite 2: They will be upon us soon.
Israelite 3: Surely, the Lord wouldn’t have brought us
through the sea to the other side only to
have the Egyptians get us over here.
Israelite 1: Look, Moses is raising his hand again.
Israelite 2: The sea, the walls are collapsing.
Israelite 3: Right on the Egyptians.
Israelite 1: We are saved.
Israelite 2: We have been delivered this day.
Israelite 3: What god has power like our God.
Miriam: Sing to the Lord, because He has won a glorious
victory; He has thrown the horses and their
riders into the sea.
Moses & Aaron:
I will sing to the Lord, because He has won
a glorious victory; He has thrown the horses
and their riders into the sea.
Israelite 1: The Lord is my strong defender; He is the
One Who has saved me.
Israelite 2: He is my God, and I will praise Him…and I
will sing about His greatness.
Israelite 3: The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is His Name.
Israelite 4: Your right hand, Lord is awesome in power;
Israelite 1: It breaks the enemy in pieces.
Israelite 2: In majestic triumph You overthrow Your foes.
Israelite 3: You blew on the sea and the water piled up
high;
Israelite 4: It stood up straight like a wall.
Israelite 5: The deepest part of the sea became solid.
Israelite 1: The enemy said,” I will pursue them…”
Israelite 2: But one breath from You, Lord,
Israelite 3: And the Egyptians were drowned.
Israelite 4: They sank like lead in the terrible water.
Israelite 5: Lord, who among the gods is like You?
Israelite 1: Who is like You…
Israelite 2: Wonderful in holiness?
Israelite 3: Who can work miracles
Israelite 4: And mighty acts like Yours?
Israelite 5: Faithful to Your promise
Israelite 1: You led the people You had rescued.
Israelite 2: By Your strength You guide them…
Israelite 3: The people You have set free from slavery.
Israelites: You, Lord, will be King forever and ever.
